This is the brilliant new novel by Rose Tremain - intensely, unputdownably gripping. It’s about a retired antiques dealer who buys a run-down ancient house in rural France, with a view to doing it up. What he doesn’t realise is that he’s opened up an enormous can of worms (how you say, peut des vers) within the local community, with deep fissures reaching back many, many years. It’s creepy and delightfully dark, and there is a sense of something very, very ominous looming throughout the book – a touch of Marcel Pagnol and a touch of Ian McEwan. It’s also extremely good on France and French people, and their contrast to English people. So you’ve got brilliantly decrepit old rural tyrants, British, er, bankers and lots of naïve and self-interested people – all heading for a precipitous and calamitous end!
