Relationships are complex entities in their own right. Interactions with individuals extend to many levels and layers. One may think they know a person but then discover an entirely new aspect in that person unknown previously. The attraction of certain individuals remains a continual mystery-why is one person always the major cause of conflict, demand, and struggle? In the novel, “Wuthering Heights”, Emily Bronte meets this challenge with her character Heathcliff. Heathcliff is charismatic to some, appalling to others, and one of the greatest enigmas in literary fiction. “Wuthering Heights” begins in a damp, rainy, and dreary setting all of which Bronte describes with her magnificent use of language. Reading the novel at this time of year, we can truly experience the setting of dark cloudy days and cold dampness. The weather itself is symbolic in the novel as people and relationships become more unsettled and tumultuous. Emily Bronte has a unique method of telling the story through her use of the narrative. The novel begins with Mr. Lockwood arriving at Thrushcross Grange, a house on the moors that is owned by Heathcliff who lives in Wuthering Heights. Mr. Lockwood decides to explore his surroundings and takes refuge at Wuthering Heights after a storm ensues. While at Wuthering Heights, Mr. Lockwood has a nightmare, which he sees the ghost of Catherine Earnshaw beckoning to be let into the house. Mr. Lockwood is more intrigued than terrified and seeks to learn more about Catherine. He queries the housekeeper, Nelly Dean and from there the story commences unfolding as a puzzle within many puzzles. She tells of Heathcliff’s early years and his connection to Catherine Earnshaw. At this stage, we the readers are introduced to many of the key players in this story: Edgar Linton, Hindley Earnshaw, Hareton Earnshaw, Isabella Linton, Linton Heathcliff, and Catherine (Cathy) Linton. The relationships between these characters move in a whirlwind of scandal, jealousy, rage, and vengeance. This novel is not to be taken lightly. On the contrary, this novel lends itself to interpretation by the reader’s own experience with complicated situations and individuals. With several readings of this novel, the reader is able to discover many new facets about the story. Emily Bronte’s “Wuthering Heights” timeless masterpiece is one of the most haunting love stories in English literature.

"Wuthering Heights" by Emily Bronte is, perhaps, the most beautifully tragic love story of all time. "Wuthering Heights" is a tale of the disruptive and detremental romance between Heathcliff and Cathy Earnshaw which will leave them and everyone connected to them haunted for many generations to come. "Wuthering Heights" takes place in the erie moorlands of Yorkshire where the landscape is rough and desperately lonesome. Essentially, the very setting of "Wuthering Heights" seems to be a reflection of Heathcliff's harsh and tortured character that, eventually, Cathy is destined to love. However, it is not long before Cathy starts to demonstrate Heathcliff's same and tragic characteristcs. "Wuthering Heights" is beautiful, morbid, haunting and everlasting. It is a powerful love story that will leave readers urged to find out more. It is captivating and definitely one to be read.

If your only experience of Wuthering Heights thus far, has been made-for-TV series, then you are missing out. Emily Bronte's novel is included on lists of must-read books for good reason, as one of the most haunting love stories in English literature. Having read it when I was very young, I find upon re-reading it that one discovers a multi-faceted quality in the description and dialogue that Bronte so brilliantly and seamlessly creates. The story of a love that cannot be between Catherine and Heathcliff is set against a dreary, harsh Northern landscape - a beautiful contrast, yet seemingly fitting, as their romance is nothing if not tempestuous. I find it difficult to describe why one should read this novel if you haven't yet done so, and I've yet to meet a person who hasn't - everything about it draws you in; the passionate characters, descriptive narrative and dialogue which reveals just enough to keep the reader hooked until the last page - go read!
