A book that brilliantly encapsulates the search for meaning and vibrancy amongst the broken promises and false expectations in striving to obtain the American Dream. Searingly honest with moments of pinprick poignancy, we follow Jack and April Wheeler as they attempt to come to terms with, and break free from, their mundane suburban life. Accurately painting the truths of marriage, feelings of unfulfilment and entrapment, and creeping notions of regret from past decisions, this is an unflinching portrait of individual yearnings set against a backdrop of conformist 1950's social mores.

This is a heartbreakingly memorable read about the pulsating dreams and aspirations that lurk beneath everyday life, and a must-read for those who have ever asked the insatiable question 'is this it?'. Despite its bleak tone, the beauty and delicacy of Yates' writing leaves us feeling refreshed and reaffirmed about positively striving to shape our own destiny.

After finding it initially hard going, I enjoyed Yate's commentary style once I was adjusted to it. His honest, open perspective of American suburban life is refreshing, and steers clear of committing the usual cliche's when a novelist attempts to convey the dashed hopes and unfulfilled expectations of many of America's population (although Frank's brief affair with a secretary seemed to me a little trite). However, the story of Frank and April Wheeler shows how a dissection of the lives of two ordinary people can be moving, entertaining, passionate and at times, emotional. Whilst I felt this book required some perserverance, I am glad I did - if you are looking for an action packed thriller this is not the book for you, but if you have an appreciation of good writing, and a sense of empathy with the normal, everyday hopes of Frank and April Wheeler then I guarantee you will enjoy this book.
In today's modern age, many people feel that to see the film or TV series is to have read the book - this is a travesty! Please make time to read the books of the films you've seen, or even read the books before you see the films, as I find it offers a great deal more clarity and critical comment. This novel is every bit as beautiful as the award winning film made from it, if not more so, because Yates captures the tiniest subtlty of human behaviour, and manages to engage the reader in the lives of Frank and April so artfully, that one often completely forgets oneself in its pages.
