Truely an amazing novel, my hands were literally glued to it's pages, and when i had to stop reading i couldn't wait to start reading again. A rather emotional novel throughout with language that truely captures the circumstance of the men at war. There isn't a single friend that i haven't recommended it to. Definitely one of my absolute favorites

The concept of Birdsong and the techniques used in writing it both in the past and the present enhanced its meaning for me, putting each character within a greater context and adding depth to their stories. But what I really loved about the book was the way it brilliantly created the sense of the intensity of the love affair and the horror of the wartime experience. Although these two central themes are contrasting in content, their descriptions have a similar effect upon the reader, engrossing them further and further into Stephen's compelling story. The author creates a vivid picture of the emotional impact on the characters of both Stephen's love affair with Isabelle Azaire and his experiences of being a tunneller in the grip of trench warfare. This increases one's involvement and identification with the central figures in the book. Birdsong is an extremely memorable book which I can see myself returning to for years to come.
